Chalford, near Oakridge, in the early twentieth century. (Authorâs collection)
James turned to farming, an occupation in which his growing family assisted. In 1871 he was working 139 acres at Tunley and employing one man. The family had undergone a surname change, recorded in the census of that year as Windham, though in later years it was spelt Wyndham. In 1881 James was working 169 acres of land at Twissellâs Farm, Oakridge Lynch, employing three men, a woman and a boy, and living in Frampton Place farmhouse.
Frederick married Ellen Hill in 1871; the couple settled in Stroud and raised five children. Of all the family his surname is most frequently spelt Windham in official records. Over the years Frederickâs relationship with his father had mellowed, and he was not lacking in filial duty, for on more than one occasion he had driven his father home when the old man was helplessly drunk, lifted him out of the trap, settled him in his armchair and walked the 5 miles back home to Stroud. In 1881 he was working a milk round, but that enterprise failed and he was unemployed for a while. In 1891 the family was living in Summer Street and Frederick was a butcher, but at the beginning of 1893 he found employment with 26-year-old farmer and coal merchant William David Farrar, as bailiff of Abbey Farm.
In 1889 Sarah Jemima died. It is not unknown for a widower approaching 70 to look for a new wife, but what distinguished James Wyndham from other men of his age was his obsession with finding a spirited sexual partner and the determined manner in which he worked his way through the more obliging women of the district.
